10 Pieces of advice you shouldn't follow

i'm going to give you advice on advice. no, the irony doesn't escape me. i am not an expert on anything, i'm not a therapist or a doctor. i don't have a counseling license, half the time i don't even know what i'm doing. but all of these are things i've learned the hard way. i took the field trip. trust me.

10. Never go to sleep angry.  wrong. sometimes you just need to go to sleep. most of us are at our emotional worst by the end of the day. we're tired, impatient and done. trying to iron out marital spats while in that place is a disaster waiting to happen. there are few things that don't seem quite so bad after a good night's sleep. so give each other a kiss (forced) and decide to sleep on it. it probably won't seem like nearly as big of a deal in the morning!

9. You can't spoil a baby. Uh, sure you can. Obviously infants need their needs met to form healthy attachment. No one is debating that. But your baby does not need to be held all of the time. Or while they sleep. Because even though that seems precious now, in a year it will not. When your child screams outside the door every time you shower. When you can never have a date night because you're the only one who can put your little darling to bed. Or worse, when you haven't had sex in a year because that sweetheart will only sleep between you and your husband. No baby has ever died from being allowed to cry while his mother showered. Trust me.

8. Don't cry over spilled milk.  Listen, if that milk is spilled in your minivan, which now smells like curdled death every time you get in it? Go ahead and cry. It won't make your van smell better but it may make you feel better. Besides, it's good for kids to learn that sometimes mommy cries too.

7. Marriage is 50/50. No. Marriage is more like 150/150, if it's going to last. I'm not a mathematician, but i'm pretty sure that adds up. There will be days when your spouse gives far less than you feel like they should. Give even more those days. When the tables turn and YOU are the depleted one, they will hopefully give it back.  The premise is simple: if both parties of a marriage are focusing their energy on making the other happy, odds are you will both be happy.

6.  It takes a village to raise a child. Not so much. In fact, we really just need the village to stop telling us how to raise our children on facebook.

5. Boys will be boys! Yes, they will. Until their mother teaches them how to act likek civil human beings and doesn't excuse their behavior by their gender. I have boys that are ALL boy. I can let them be that without letting them act like savages because they have a penis.

4. It's the thought that counts. If the thought was "My wife would LOVE an ab roller for Valentine's day!" you are wrong and it does not count.

3. God will never give you more than you can handle! Uh, yes He will. If you could handle it all on your own, what would you need God for? He will not, however, give you anything that the two of you cant handle together :)

2. Enjoy every moment! If you enjoy googling how to get urine out of furnace ducts, I can't help you.

1. Fake it till you make it! I think this one is the most damaging to mothers.  You know what? If you are not "making it", you don't have to pretend you are. It's ok to tell people you are struggling and you need help. It is good for you. Sometimes we all just need to permission to be a hot mess.  If you fake it, how will your  friends know to bring iced lattes and take a kid for an hour? Be real. It's the only way to survive this thing called motherhood with a shred of sanity. Your friends will appreciate it, your kids will learn that it's OK to ask for help and you will model for them that weaknesses are not dirty secrets to be hidden away. You will teach them to be who they are, flaws and all. And isn't that what we really want for them?

Mompetition, Part 2

if you've been here a while, you may remember this post. it was one of my most widely read. it was all about the competition that is motherhood. nobody talks about it but it's there. in the past few weeks i have seen it rampant on facebook. from judgement about where to send your kid to school to the great breastfeeding debate, it's everywhere. and now we have pinterest and facebook and etsy to really bring home all of the things other moms are doing that we aren't. have you ever searched "kid's birthday party" on pinterest? holy. cow... don't do it. if i've learned anything in 13 years of parenting, it's stop comparing yourself to other mothers. stay out of the race, you can't win.

and yet... i still battle it. i find myself justifying my parenting choices to those who disagree. or getting irate at a facebook debate with people i don't even know! i realized a few weeks ago how far i need to go while attending a parent's meeting for one of my children. my kids attend a phenomenal private christian school. we love it there and we work our tails off to afford tuition. that being said, we are probably not your typical "private school parents".  So i'm sitting in this meeting, looking around, noticing how different i am than most of the other mothers. i don't own a sweater set. i have visible tattoos. i've never once sent an adorable themed snack to school for one of my kids' birthdays. heck, most of my kids' teacher may not even know what i look like. but the thing that stood out to me the most was that i was the only mom sitting alone. most of the other mothers know each other because they all volunteer often.  i'm at work. i don't have time to be at the school in the middle of the day. i have five kids and a job and a business and a million other responsibilities. i sat there feeling judgement that probably didn't even exist. if i really think about it, i bet none of them had a thought about me at all. but it bothered me. i began that familiar condemnation of mom guilt...reminding myself of all the things i don't do.

i've never thrown a big party for any of my kid's birthdays. in fact, i've never even sent anything to school for them.
i've never made a costume, a set of curtains or even hemmed a skirt. i bribe my dear friend Nicole to hem my kid's uniforms!
i've never decorated for a holiday other than Christmas.
i've never taken my kids to disney world.
my  kids don't play sports and i could not be happier about it.

the list could go on on and on of all the things i don't do that make me not good enough as a mother. if i allow it, my insecurity could convince me that i am failing in all areas of motherhood.

but if i pull myself out of that destructive pit for just a moment, i can think about the things i am doing for my kids. when they are grown, will they be mad that i never threw an elaborate party for them? or will they be glad that i taught them to love every kind of music from punk to gospel to blue grass to hip hop.
will they feel that they missed out on having a mom that does crafts and activities? or will they realize the value of a mom who taught them to dance in the garage, to laugh when life sucks and that it's ok to say "sucks" when no other word will work.
will my daughters wish i had taught them to clean more, cook better, sew costumes? or will they realize that i may have missed those things... i did teach them to think for themselves, to dream big, to be what ever they want to be.

at the core of judgement is our own hearts. what others think is only significant if deep inside we agree.  so if you are a crafty mom...craft on! if you are a dancing mom, turn up the music! whatever your style, be who you are and don't let anyone tell you it's not good enough. especially yourself.

homeschool, public school, private school, breastfeeding, bottle feeding, attachment parenting, staying at home, working outside of the home, car seats, booster seats, potty seats... whatever your choose...
 OWN IT.
and don't let anyone convince you otherwise!

more facebook... i can't resist!

when i wrote my original post about facebook, i thought it was comprehensive. little did i know that the lovely form of social media would just keep giving me more and more material! i've been trying to fight writing this post for a few weeks now, in an attempt to not offend my last few readers! but i just can't keep my mouth shut any longer! i must let it out!! so in no particular order....

~ is there something in the fb rules and regulations that states this as the perfect venue to offer condescending, unsolicited advice?  here are some things i've seen recently:  a picture of an adorable toddler standing up in their crib for the first time set off a storm of comments about lowering the crib mattress. the mother of this toddler has three children. i think she knows to lower the mattress. take a deep breath! similarly, someone posted a pic of an adorable baby sleeping in a carseat, strapped in appropriately. but wait! one darling "friend" inspected the style of the carseat and determined that it must be an older model and therefore is NOT safe for that child. seriously? you should put those super detective skills to work somewhere else. like maybe where people actually care to hear your opinions.

~vaguebooking.... we've discussed in our last post. but it cannot be repeated enough. this is NOT a status "pray, bad things, can't share more."  followed by three days of nothing. is this person dead? did someone steal their wifi? are they in the witness protection program? if you can't share then ...... DON'T SHARE.
whew, i'm getting really really shouty CAPS over here and we're only on the second one. i better take a few deep breaths.

~ok, i'm under control now. i will not be under control if i'm forced to continually see my mom's friends posting uber cleavage-y pics of themselves taken in the bathroom, with their lips stuck out like they are a cast member on the Real Housewives of the OC.  let's just legislate some guidelines here: if you are over 21, do not take pics in the bathroom. if you are over 30, do not put your girls on fb.  if you are a teenager, just remember that the internet is forever and someday you may want a career. just sayin!

~bashing your place of work, especially when it is a non profit ministry.  it's ok for you to be unhappy there. it's ok for you to vent to your friends about your unhappiness. it is NOT ok for you to bash that institution repeatedly online. it is super offensive to the many parents of students there. it is also not a very good representation of your character. put your big girl pants on and take your issues to the people that can address them. that's called maturity.

~while we're on the topic of bashing, the above rule also applies to spouses, in laws, and your children. don't say terrible things about your family. just don't. keep it to yourself.

~and since we mentioned husbands, let me also clarify that details of your sex life are totally unnecessary. like really. i do NOT need to know that you both had sex when you woke up this morning. nobody needed to know that .  but thanks for sharing.

~and lastly, the business facebooker. look, i'm glad you're making some extra money. i truly am. however, i feel i should disclose a few things. if your statuses are always about your product and how wonderful it is, i will "hide" you. please stop inviting me to every party you have. or worse, asking me to host one. if i wake up tomorrow and want make-up or purses or jewelry or cooking supplies or a vacation package- I'll call you!

have we finally covered all of the bases yet??? somehow i bet not....

more true confessions...

it's been awhile since we aired a little dirty laundry, eh? i know there's nothing you love more than finding out just how dysfunctional i am! if you haven't read the past ones, you can do so here :)

10. pinterest annoys me. i'm not saying there aren't really cool crafts and recipes and picture of cats with clothes on. but i don't have time to actually do any of that stuff so why spend time looking at it? i keep trying to love it because everyone else seems to but after about four minutes i'm bored. i feel like i should apologize here....

9. i have three different types of underwear: "donttouchmeimgoingstraighttobed", "ifyouplayyourcardsrightyoumightgetsomeaction" and "itsON". my husband can easily identify each type.

8. i tried really hard to pretend i couldn't hear my kids getting into oreos the other day because i didn't want to stop what i was doing and discipline them. which backfired horribly when i realized they had spilled the whole package on my bedroom floor.

7. i like to watch parking wars.

6. i also like to eat chips for breakfast.

5. i have zero to no tolerance for whining. it makes me crazy. especially when it's someone else's kid.

4. i don't buy organic and i don't feel the slightest bit guilty about it.

3. i like reality tv way too much.

2. i have a terrible time disciplining esme because i think she's so funny.

1. i can't blog when i don't have anything to say and i feel guilty when i don't blog, like i'm letting people down. letting people down is one of my biggest insecurities.

do you have any confessions you need to make?

true confessions: vacation edition

it's been quite awhile since we had some true confessions! what are true confessions? all of those things you are thinking but never want to say... but i do! let's not hold back here!

we just returned from our mini vacay. we spent four days traveling around the midwest visiting museums, family and friends. we went to a children's museum, a family wedding and spent a night with my best friend. however, this trip meant lots of driving, lots of time in hotels, and trying to keep things semi normal for five kids in lots of new environments. which brings us to our confessions...

~ 7 people in a hotel room is not a good time. it's really not. we stayed in a nice hotel in downtown indianapolis the first night. the kids were super excited and bouncing off the walls. i thought that after a full day at the museum, swimming and a filling dinner, they would pass out. nope. the baby was a mess. standing in her pack and play screaming like it was the apocalypse. the other kids were fighting over space, blankets and any thing else they could possibly think of. and i was ready to visit the hotel bar. good times.

~ i realized when we returned that my little kids hadn't had a bath in four days. and i told myself it was ok since they swam every day.

~ her royal highness does not like car rides. so she responds by screeching as loud as she can until she falls asleep. i'm not gonna lie. i was really wishing i had some kind of medicine that would knock her out.

~ all day at the children's museum i saw parents glued to their phones, totally ignoring their kids. and it made me really mad. interact with your flippin kids. put your phone down and be present. someday you just might look back and realize you missed it.

~ i may or may not have snapped at some kid who was picking on esme. he kept pushing her hand off anything she touched and telling her no. he was probably 7. i think i scared him. i don't feel the slightest bit guilty about it.

~i got a little choked up at the barbie exhibit! it brought back so many happy memories from my childhood and i was happy to go through the exhibit with my own daughters.

~ i hate public pools and try my hardest not to get in them.

~ i spent the last 24 hrs of the trip counting down the moments until we got home and i could get away from all of these people.

~ i need a vacation of my own to recover from the one with the family!

am i mother of the year or what?

true confessions part 4

you know what time it is?? it's time for true confessions? it's been awhile since i've divulged my deep dark secrets for all to judge. what's more fun than hearing how dysfunctional someone else is? let's do this!

1. remember when i told you i was seeing a counselor to deal with my anger issues? well, i'm not doing so well. as in, i became totally enraged with a stranger just yesterday at the grocery and had to mentally convince myself that it was not ok to ram him with my cart. but i did mutter some not very nice things loud enough for him to hear. in defense of my counselor, some circumstances have occurred that have prevented me from seeing him for quite awhile. i'm going back next week. my anger has grown into this whole other entity that i drag around with me. not good. not good at all.

2. sleep deprivation is making me a crazy. i am so tired i cannot see straight. it's making me mean and hateful. it also means my kids are eating random items for breakfast, such as cheezits, because i'm too tired to care. now i know i've told you in the past how i like to eat those types of things for breakfast but i usually try to make sure my kids are a little healthier. right now i just don't care. as long as they're fed we're all good.

3. i sure did make theMr take the princess to urgent care this past weekend when her earring was ripped out of her ear because i couldn't handle it. i thought she was going to have to have a shot and stitches and i was sick to my stomach thinking about it. so i had him do it. turns out they glued her earlobe together! crazy!

4. i've seen eclipse twice and i'm dying to see it again. this should come as no surprise to my regular readers as you all know how i feel about twilight :)

5. i may have thrown away some underwear that a certain three year old had an accident in so i didn't have to get them clean. maybe...

6. i may have also not given certain phone messages to my almost 11 year old because i prefer she not hang out with that person.

7. and lastly, i may have pretended (just moments ago) that i had no idea my son was sneaking a cookie from the jar so i wouldn't have to discipline him for it!

true confessions part 3

so i was told recently by someone who was mad at me that i think i'm perfect. while that could not be farther from the truth, maybe i am not as transparent about my faults as i thought i was? who knows but here goes, my faults. as honestly as i can make them.

- i'm a sarcastic A-hole when i'm angry. i really am. i can have a biting tongue when provoked. i would like to say i'm working on it but honestly i'm not making much progress. i'll keep you posted.

- i am never wrong. never. ok, maybe i am wrong and i just don't realize it.

- i am extremely loyal ( i know, that's not bad) but once someone has pushed me to a certain point i'm done. i have a lot of patience but once i've lost it i've truly lost it. unfortunately, there's a point of no return and i can never seem to find my way back from it.

- i'm terribly strong willed and sure of myself. not a good combo. i will fight for anything i believe is right and i'm sure i'm always right. you do the math.

- i'm abrasive. oh the abrasiveness. this has one of two results. either people think it's funny and "just who i am" or they are highly offended. or they think it's funny until i go too far and then they are offended.

- i will defend my family fiercely, even if they're in the wrong. not always a good thing.

- i want to be better than i am, i want to strive to be more. yet i find myself sinking into my "self" whenever i get angry. that i truly am working on. remember that therapy i talked about? we're working on it.

this is really just the tip of the iceberg. ask anyone who knows me well. or has ticked me off in the last 32 years. or cut me off in traffic. or cussed at their kids in walmart in my presence. you get the picture.

true confessions part 3

it's time for another true confessions post! it's time to let out the ugly truth for all to judge! here we go!!
i watch twilight whenever my husband is gone for an evening. and i still swoon. he's out of town for this entire weekend. you do the math.

i've quickly "dusted" my end tables and mantle with baby wipes when unexpected company is coming over.

i own a pocket sized edward cullen doll and i take pictures of him with my cell phone in random, funny situations. i'm that awesome. or ridiculous....

i've been known to teach my toddler sarcastic remarks and then act clueless when he repeats them in the presence of another adult.

sometimes i bake chocolate chip cookies after everyone else is in bed and i don't share them. with anyone. i eat them all. hence the 30lbs i need to lose.

i love crossword puzzles but i am super anal about how they're done. i can only use a pencil and it has to be mechanical and have a good eraser. those people that do them with a pen totally freak me out. thrill seekers they are!

i secretly think my kids are better than everyone else's and it's not cause i'm biased!

i admit things on my blog because i think it will relieve me of all guilt!

true confessions part 2

it's time for another true confessions. you know, all those terrible things you didn't know about me that you can judge me for later! without further ado...

1. i'm horrific at keeping up with laundry and i really don't care. you will never come in my house and not find huge piles of laundry waiting to be done. with six people, i'd have to do at least two loads a day to keep up. never gonna happen. i'd rather read a book. as long as everyone has clean underwear we're good. or i can buy more underwear. whatever works.

2. i have a terrible potty mouth. as a christian woman, i really try to control it. but i have to say that if i wasn't a christian woman, i'd probably have a mouth like a sailor. the thing is, i really like cussing. it makes me feel better. ask theMr. he knows all about it. except when i'm really, really, super mad- he giggles when i cuss. he thinks it's cute. which does not amuse me when i'm that angry.

3. i hate breakfast food, so i eat really random things for breakfast. example? i had taco dip today. and not because i'm pregnant, that's actually normal for me. it grosses out theMr. he's a big fan of breakfast. ironically, i make an excellent omelet. i've never eaten them but i've been told they're killer.

4. i have a major shoe fetish. i seriously have more shoes than any one woman could ever need. the worst part is that many of them are extremely high heels. how often do you suppose i need heels as a stay at home mom? i don't care, i cannot resist a cute pair of shoes. i can always justify it in my mind.

5. i'm extremely loyal ( i know, that's good, the bad part is coming) until you cross me. if you make me realize i should not have trusted you, there's a good chance i never will again. i don't handle betrayal well at all. i'm 100% devoted to those i love and will literally do anything in the world for them. if you betray that trust, i will have a hard time ever extending that to you again. once my "wall" goes back up, it's hard to get down.

6. i write for a reality tv show website but i do so anonymously so readers are not directed to my blog. that way i can be a little more catty than i would normally be :)

Your turn! share your true confessions with me, come on! it'll make you feel better!

true confessions

i read this on another blog and thought i'd do it. i have three sick kids so i have no energy to be creative today! so here goes, my true confessions....

1. i hate to mop the floor. i avoid it as much as possible. in fact, sometimes i wait all week because i know if it gets bad enough my husband will do it on saturday morning.

2. i'm a tv addict. all morning i look forward to nap time so i can eat a snack and watch my shows. sometimes, i think it's the only thing that gets me through the day.

3. i'm not a "crafts/activities" kind of mom, but i'm trying to be. i've realized that simply being at home all day does not make me a good mom. i'm trying really hard to come up with fun, educational things to do with the kids. as i enter my tenth (holy moly!) year of parenting, i realize more and more that parenting is a process. i'm a much better mom than i was ten years ago but i still have lots of room for improvement.

4. i secretly think my husband is hotter than any of my friend's husbands and i don't think it's because i'm partial:) he is really that hot.

5. i come across as extremely confident and self assured when in reality, i have alot of insecurities. sometimes i secretly wonder if i'm that high maintenance person that everyone knows.

6. i am super at utilizing undergarments. people frequently tell me how great i look after having four kids. if they could see all that is going on under these clothes they would crack up. it's like a complicated jig saw puzzle.

7. i'm hooked on infomercials and i always want to buy what they're selling! it's a really good thing we don't use credit cards or i'd probably own alot of useless junk. for some reason i always believe what they say!

soooo..... i'm tagging samantha, sassy, ashley and rebecca!
